Common Core Math: Numbers in Base Ten

From kindergarten to fifth grade, students build an understanding of whole numbers in terms of place values in base 10. Students begin by decomposing two-digit numbers into 10s and 1s places. Gradually, students generalize their understanding of place value to determine the place value of a digit in any position in a number, including digits after a decimal point. Place value provides a conceptual foundation for adding and subtracting and, eventually, multiplying and dividing numbers. Students also use place value reasoning to round numbers to a given place and to compare the values of two numbers.
