Common Core Math: Algebraic Thinking

From kindergarten to fifth grade, students develop an understanding of the four arithmetic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students learn to perform these operations on whole numbers, then build on this knowledge to begin working with variables representing unknowns. Students simplify expressions and solve algebraic equations using mathematical notation (+, –, ×, ÷ and =). By fifth grade, students perform multiple operations in a single problem and use arithmetic to discover and describe numerical patterns.
