In fifth grade, students write, simplify and evaluate expressions that contain multiple operations. Students learn to define and interpret expressions with parentheses in accordance with the order of operations. Students also work with numerical patterns, including by describing them verbally or algebraically and by visualizing their terms as ordered pairs plotted on a coordinate plane.
