Common Core Math: Grade 6

In sixth grade, students work with algebraic expressions involving exponents and variables. Students manipulate expressions, verify solutions to equations and inequalities, and algebraically solve one-step equations. Students explore relationships between two quantities, distinguishing between independent and dependent variables. Students collect data by asking statistical questions and summarize the resulting data distributions, both by reporting measures of center and spread and by displaying data in plots. Students perform arithmetic with fractions and negative numbers, visualizing their work with number lines, tape diagrams and plots. Students also work with ratios to describe proportional relationships and percentages.
