Common Core Math: Grade 6: Number System

In sixth grade, students perform division with fractions, using visual models and equations to illustrate their thinking. Students fluently add, subtract, multiply and divide multi-digit numbers. Students compute the greatest common factor and least common multiple of pairs of whole numbers. The concept of negative numbers is introduced. Students interpret negative numbers and absolute values in real-world contexts and use a number line to visualize the relationship between positive and negative numbers. With their understanding of negative numbers, students plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
