Planets

The International Astronomical Union recognizes eight planets in our solar system. Each one orbits the Sun, has enough mass and gravity to maintain a roughly spherical shape, does not undergo nuclear fusion in its core, and has cleared its orbit of neighboring asteroids and other minor planets. The composition of planets ranges from rocky to gaseous to icy or combinations of these. Some planets have a significant atmosphere and/or magnetic field, while others may lack one or both. Some planets have natural satellites, while others do not. Discover these and other properties of the planets using Wolfram|Alpha.
