Earth's Moon goes through a sequence of phases as it orbits the Earth. These range from new moon to full moon in a smooth, continuous progression. When the Moon is nearly between the Earth and Sun, it is in the new moon phase. When it is opposite the Sun, it is seen in the full moon phase.
